Comment: Captain X gives his name as “John Payton” in this story.  Since he is Dane’s father, it is probable that those are his first and middle names.  Since John Dorrance did appear in SHOWCASE #27-28, the effect that caused him to be confined to his submarine probably did not take over until after those issues.
Synopsis: The Sea Devils are induced by one of their Indian adherents to intervene in a battle between the mysterious sub commander, Captain X, and his foe, the shape-changing merman, Man-Fish.

Comment: Sometime after this story Dane Dorrance and Judy Walton get married and appear with Christopher Chance, the Human Target, in DETECTIVE COMICS #486.  Then the Sea Devils join the heroes of Earth against an alien invader in SHOWCASE #100, after which they appear as members of the Forgotten Heroes (sometimes, only Dane Dorrance being present) to team with Superman in ACTION COMICS #545 against Brainiac, in ACTION COMICS #552-553 against Vandal Savage, and in DC COMICS PRESENTS #77-78 against the Forgotten Villains.  Then the Sea Devils join the heroes of the Multiverse to fight the Anti-Monitor in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #5, 7, their last Earth-One appearance.
Synopsis: The Sea Devils believe that Dane has been transformed into a sea monster, and grieve when the U. S. military destroys it.
